You’ve gotten each Game Guru’s gobbledy-gook, plotted your PLN, anticipated your audience, outlined your objectives, navigated your narrative, and manifested your game mechanics.  What’s left?

It’s time for the boss battle.  The biggest and final challenge.

 

In this quest you must draw from all of the special knowledge and skills you’ve acquired thoughout Distance Gamification.  Understanding how game construction can support your learning goals is the crucial before you are ready to gamify your entire learning system.

Make Your Game Quiz

 

The world is on the brink of disaster!  Is your quest ready to help save it? 

 

Almost!

Now that you’ve identified your player types, outlined your objectives, framed your narrative, and quilled your quest, you need to create your assessment. Create a game quiz for your subject area (or any topic that you’ve chosen for your lesson) that:

      • Motivates a wide range of players
      • Meets your objective
      • Moves your story forward

For example, for a narrative about a ragtag team of scientists who have to decode a secret message about the meaning of relative time before aliens use their giant energy gun to convert the earth’s mass into light, you could create a model ProProfs Brain Game word scramble about Einstein’s theory of special relativity.   You could then have students design their own games (of any type) that address a specific lesson objective, like “students will be able to demonstrate how gravity relates to time.” It doesn’t have to be digital.  You may decide to modify a board game or create your own.

 

Before you begin, watch Extra Credits:  Games in Education for some tips about how games should and shouldn’t be used in an educational setting.

You’ve met every challenge with grit and resolve.  Now it’s time for you to master the art of Questcraft. The more quests you and your learners create, the more problem solving inquiry paths will be available to potential world-savers!

 

In this quest you will support your narrative by creating a quest about ANY topic for YOUR learning environment.  For example, for a narrative about intrepid adventurers who follow the cyborg Yeti trail of lost treasures across 7 continents, your first quest could involve learning about the continents, the Yeti, and/or map skills.  

 

To begin…

They cannot go to the next step until they achieve the correct answer. Each group will have varied answers so they cannot share answers. Each step contains more clues about where to go next. Eventually they will unlock the last case to find someone in that room is the criminal. The learning will be measured by the completion of the task. There is a specific order the students need to complete the walk, students will need to visit each station exactly once following the specific color associated with their answer, in order to do it properly, if they make a mistake the students will need to find their error and try and fix it themselves. Hints will be provided at the station as a slight aid for the students if they’re struggling.The quest will occur around the classroom and it will not require technology. Once students move to the new pattern they will watch a video on how to complete a 6 stack before practicing the pattern. Once students are comfortable then they will try the 3-6-3 pattern and be able to move on to the next level. This quiz has 12 questions related to the plot of the entire play. This game of Kahoot will be a way for students to casually review the story and have fun at the same time! If students answer these questions incorrectly, this will be a chance for the class to discuss the correct answer. This lesson will take place after the class has finished reading the entire play. First, I will guide the class through a short game of Kahoot. This quiz has 12 questions related to the plot of the entire play. This game of Kahoot will be a way for students to casually review the story and have fun at the same time! If students answer these questions incorrectly, this will be a chance for the class to discuss the correct answer.Next, students will have a choice of two different assignments.First, students may create an illustration to summarize the plot of Macbeth. Since there are five acts in the play, students will be asked to create one illustration for each act depicting a major event in the story. Each illustration will include a one paragraph description of the image including the setting, characters, and the action taking place. The second option is for students to Act (or film) a shortened version of the play in front of the class. Whether it is filmed or performed, students will write a one-page paper reflecting on their experience as an actor. Students should explain why they included each scene in their performance. Students should also explain the various choices they made in creating their performance. The assessment for this Quest will be based on a three-point system. 1 – Below Standard 2 – Meets Standard 3 – Exceed Standard The Kahoot quiz will not be graded. You are nearing the end of your training, but before you can flesh out your world-saving quest you need to target your player types with an appealing narrative. 

 

The narrative above that has been embedded throughout Distance Gamification as a model can be summarized as follows:

You are an educational game maker in-training (<–identity) who must complete challenges as you learn to create games (<–obstacles) that will save the world (<–goal).

You’ve learned that narratives can give you choices that determine the outcome of the story.  Now you can inspire an inquiry mindset in your learners with a choice-filled narrative of your own! 

Keep it simple.  What storyline will be appropriate for your subject matter, easily applied to your environment, and imbue a sense of purpose in your learner?

For each wrong question, the student will lose one of the stacked blocks they already had.The students will be given questions about solving a system of linear equations using three different methods; by graphing, elimination, or substitution as they attempt to stack more blocks to get the highest score.

Specifically, one boss will be Curley: They will have to figure out a way to get on Curley’s good side (throughout that level they will be asked questions about characterization and how developing a character helps them to better understand the novel and situations). Boss 2 will be Curley’s wife: They will have to figure out how to dodge Curely’s wife’s advances (this level will continue to build on characterization). The third boss is Slim: They will have to convince Slim to join them in their dream (this level will focus on theme, specifically the theme of companionship in the novel). The fourth boss will be Lennie: They need to make sure George stops Lennie from killing Lennie’s wife (this level will focus on foreshadowing and foreshadowing clues specific to the novel). The fifth and final boss will be George overcoming his internal conflict of attaining the American Dream (this level will focus on conflict in the novel). Their answers will have to be submitted and approved by the author (John Steinbeck, aka, the teacher). If John Steinbeck is not satisfied, he will send the group back to continue refining their ruse to overcome the challenges.You are interns at John Steinbeck’s publishing company who must overcome the boss levels along the way as you attempt to rewrite Of Mice and Men, alongside John Steinbeck, so that George does not have to kill Lennie and instead, George and Lennie can attain their American Dream. If successful, you will win the Nobel Prize in Literature as Steinbeck’s protégé.

It also talked about the parts of gamification that are positive and neccessary. There is the importance of Validation. This is something that is somewhat out of the developers control, and it's generated by what the user creates. It does however, give the user that feeling that what they are doing matters to other people (I would add that it could also matter to themselves-a sense of pride in what they create). The importance of Completion. This is being able to see the goal (5% done, 30 out of 100 points done, levels completion, etc.) This also ensures that things aren't done too fast, gives the user a sense of accomplishment over time. The importance of prizes. Yes these are extrinsic motivators, but they work. It can be something as innocuos as new gear for your avatar (so it doesn't have to cost anything), but it can also be something like a no homework reward.

The first way is gamification in grading. Students are progressing towards levels of mastery, as one does in games. Each assignment and each test feels rewarding, rather than disheartening. Using experience points allows educators to align levels with skills and highlight the inherent value of education. The second way is awarding students with badges. For each assignment completed, award students with badges. As students watch instructional videos and complete problem sets, Khan Academy awards them with points and badges to track progress and encourage perseverance it’s important to add value to the badges, like bonus points, skill levels, etc. the third is introducing actual video games into your classroom. The use of games allows students to fail, overcome, and persevere. Students are given a sense of agency—in games, they control the choices they make, and the more agency students have, the better students do. Instantaneous feedback and small rewards (or big ones, like winning) are external motivators that work. The fourth way is stirring up a little competition. Having tournaments incentivize students to learn the material and practice. After all, everyone wants to see his or her name on the leaderboard, right? the use of the tournament function egged on some competition, boosted morale and got her students excited about demonstrating their understanding. If you think about it, when an individual progresses to the next "level" of a challenge or game, they recognize that they have improved or reached a new goal. This can certainly be implemented in the classroom with the use of gaming.

Students are able to develop this language much better than adults. It is a massive generation gap. The technology children use now is much more advanced than what we started with. If we can hit upon this language of interactivity we can engage our students. If we want to use this new language of interactivity, is to translate our learning materials. What we’ve been doing is trying to layer games on top of “boring material”, the students start out by saying, “oh a game, wait boring.” We’re not tricking them. It doesn’t have to be fun, it has to be meaningful. It’s more about overcoming obstacles than it is about fun. An important design component of games is that the person playing gets a new role. A soldier, a wizard, a warrior, etc. Give students an important role or responsibility, creating that safe place to try and feel. Games also give them a clear sense of control. The student needs to feel like through their actions they are affecting the game that is facilitated by the designer. Games give instant feedback about what the player is doing wrong or right, so they can immediately try something new. Games are highly strategic in making decisions. Students need Dynamic Feedback on State. Give students a desirable aim. Desirable aims can be made up to reinforce your pedagogical aims you had for your lesson. Give students a clear sense of achievement. Not just, ok good, you did it. Games are about action verbs, you need to be able to do stuff. Most classroom consist of 3 verbs, you look, you listen, you write. Role playing games, give these (action verbs and getting to do things, take on responsibility and actions) without technology. RPG games are an expression of the language of video games. Education is the last social structure to embrace new technologies let alone speak the language.

This is it!  Today you’re going to get to build!  Every quest must include an assessment to measure whether your learners met your target.  And now you know that assessments can be fun!  The first step in your ascent to independent world-saving quest design is to create a game quiz about a gamification topic.

 

Choice plays a huge role in our enjoyment of interactive materials like the amazingly successful Choose Your Own Adventure books. In the series, YOU are the hero, and the choices you make determine the outcome of the story. Teaching and learning can be like that.  Inspire an inquiry mindset in your learners, and they’ll pursue their answers with enthusiasm equal to the autonomy you provide.

In this quest, YOU further your inquiry into the world of game thinking.  Check the Game Quiz Submissions (below) for ideas.

Finally.  You’ve reached the next training level.  You’re anxious to start building your quest.  But just as you’re about to begin you learn that before you create your world-saving game you need to learn what motivates your players! 

 

In this quest, you will take this Player Type Quiz to learn what motivates YOU and then create an avatar to represent your persona.  Avatars and “gamertags” (made-up names) help learners feel safe making mistakes, and ideally, represent the interests, characteristics and/or tools of a master in whatever skill(s) you are teaching.

Follow the video instructions below to create a DoppleMe avatar that, if possible, represents characteristics and/or skills you’d like to model for your learning environment.  (Then you may want to offer the Player Type Quiz to your learners, the better to keep your audience in mind as you flesh out your narrative in the next quest.)

In Level 2 of Distance Gamification, the lessons, or “quests,” have been designed according to the game-thinking principles taught through Level 1 and summarized in this Distance Motivation Pedagogy:

At the end of each quest, you may assess your own progress using techniques fit for the learning environment you hope to create.  By the end of this course you will have created a gamified lesson about a topic of your choice.

Designing Gamified Instruction

Well-designed gamification can make education, work and civic duties more exciting.

 

The next step on your journey is to take a broad look at how game designers teach.  Understanding the fundamentals of game design will help you prepare your learners to save the world.

 

Remember, games are systems of brain exercises that use a variety of mechanics to engage their players.  The use of these game mechanics to teach is often called “gamification” or “game-based learning,” although the differences between the two are about process more than outcome.   To learn more about gamification, complete this Gamification Overview “Breakout Room” (below) as/after you watch the Extra Credits  lesson (farther below).

Intrinsic motivation, personalization, and flow are integral to the design of a compelling experience.

 

By now you can imagine how today’s learners can achieve flow in a mastery learning system to become creative problem solvers fit for the Information Age.  This quest will teach you how to weave these concepts into a compelling experience for your world-savers. 

 

Game Guru and hit game designer Amy Jo Kim champions the importance of intrinsic motivation, mastery and flow as integral to game design.  To learn about Kim’s approach to gaming and learning, play the Amy Jo Kim “Compelling Learning” Text Quiz as or after you watch her Casual Connect presentation in Seattle, 2011.  For our purposes, it’ll be useful to imagine a “learner” every time she mentions a “gamer.”  As even Kim admits, learning is the drug that games offer.

Good games are problem-based learning systems.

 

You now know that a balance of skills and challenges is crucial for sustained engagement when learning.  If gamers can develop the skills necessary to succeed in complicated problem-based video games, can’t they contribute to solving global problems?

 

No one understands the intricacies of the learning/gaming relationship like Game Guru James Paul Gee.  A linguist by trade, Gee compares the acquisition of skills necessary to play complicated video games to learning a new language.  Watch the videos below and read paragraphs 5-6 (starting at “Today there is…”) in Learning Systems, Not Games before/as you attempt this Jeopardy review game.  Feel free to use this Jeopardy Word Bank.

Mastering Mastery with Sal Kahn

Technology makes personalized mastery learning systems sensible.

 

Game Guru Sal Kahn puts the ideas of Dan Pink and Ken Robinson into action through his world-famous Kahn Academy.  Master “Mastering Mastery” to take the next step toward saving the world.

Now that you’ve solved The Puzzle of Motivation you’re ready to join Game Guru Ken Robinson’s Learning Revolution.  You can’t reform education single-handedly.  It’ll take a movement to save the world.

 

Sir Ken Robinson makes the case for an end to our standardized educational system and calls for personalized learning to engage all students.  To learn about his proposed revolution, choose from among these Arcade Game Quizzes (below.
